Victron Smart DC-DC Charger:

The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger is a professional DC to DC adaptive 3-stage charger with built-in Bluetooth. For use in dual battery systems in vehicles or on boats where the (smart) alternator and the start battery are used to charge the service battery. The unit can be monitored and programmed via Bluetooth and can be remotely controlled via a remote on/off switch and has an engine running detection mechanism.

The Orion Tr-Smart charger can be used in 12V or 24V systems and is suitable for both lead acid and lithium batteries. Models are available up to 400W and unlimited multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power. Suitable for high temperatures up to 55°C with a full rated output up to 40°C. 

The Orion Smart DC-DC chargers can be used as a power supply or as a battery charger. In charger mode, the three-state charge algorithm will increase battery life by properly charging the battery. Especially in the case of vehicles with a smart alternator or voltage drop caused by long cable runs, controlled charging is indispensable. Controlled charging will also protect the alternator in lithium systems where direct charging can overload the alternator due to the low impedance of the lithium battery. In fixed output mode the output voltage will remain stable independent of the applied load or varying input voltage (within the specified range).

The Orion Smart DC-DC charger can be set up to only provide power when the engine is running. This is possible thanks to the built-in engine shutdown detection. This also prevents the onboard voltage of the vehicle from becoming too low. It is not necessary to intervene in the system of the vehicle, to install a separate motor run sensor or to intervene in the CAN-bus system. Apart from this detection, the Orion Smart DC-DC charger can also be activated by a forced allowed-to-charge feature, e.g. connected to the ignition switch.

The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger is fully programmable with the VictronConnect app. 


Bluetooth Smart Enabled:

Any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet or other device can be used to monitor, change settings and update the charger when new software features become available.

Battery charge algorithm (configurable) or fixed output. Smart alternator compatibility: engine running detection mechanism.

Adaptive 3-Stage Charge Algorithm:

Bulk – Absorption – Float 

For lead acid batteries, it is important that during shallow discharges the absorption time is kept short in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge, the absorption time is automatically increased to make sure that the battery is completely recharged.

For lithium batteries absorption time is fixed, default 2 hours. Alternatively, a fixed output voltage can be chosen.

Remote On/Off:

A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected to a two-pole connector. Alternatively, the H terminal (right) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery plus, or the L terminal (left) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery minus (or the chassis of a vehicle, for example).

All models are short-circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase the output current. An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel.

High Temperature Protected:

The output current will reduce at high ambient temperatures.

IP43 Protection:

When installed with the screw terminals oriented downward.

Screw Terminals:

No special tools are needed for installation.

A solar charger gathers energy from your solar panels and stores it in your batteries. Using the latest, fastest technology, SmartSolar maximises this energy harvest, driving it intelligently to achieve full charge in the shortest possible time. SmartSolar maintains battery health, extending its life.

PWM and MPPT charge controllers are both widely used to charge batteries with solar power. The PWM controller is in essence a switch that connects a solar array to the battery. The result is that the voltage of the array will be pulled down to near that of the battery. The MPPT controller is more sophisticated (and more expensive): it will adjust its input voltage to harvest the maximum power from the solar array and then transform this power to supply the varying voltage requirement of the battery plus load. Thus, it essentially decouples the array and battery voltages so that there can be, for example, a 12V battery on one side of the MPPT charge controller and panels wired in series to produce 36 volts on the other.

It is generally accepted that MPPT will outperform PWM in a cold to temperate climate, while both controllers will show approximately the same performance in a subtropical to tropical climate. Besides performing the function of a basic controller, an MPPT controller also includes a DC to DC voltage converter, converting the voltage of the array to that required by the batteries, with very little loss of power.

An MPPT controller attempts to harvest power from the array near its Maximum Power Point, whilst supplying the varying voltage requirements of the battery plus load. Thus, it essentially decouples the array and battery voltages, so that there can be a 12V battery on one side of the MPPT charge controller and two 12V panels wired in series to produce 36 volts on the other. If connected to a PV array with a substantially higher nominal voltage than the battery voltage, an MPPT controller will therefore provide charge current even at very high cell temperatures or in low irradiance conditions when a PWM controller would not help much.

As array size increases, both cabling cross-sectional area and cable length will increase. The option to wire more panels in series and thereby decrease current is a compelling reason to install an MPPT controller as soon as the array power exceeds a few hundred Watts (12V battery), or several 100 Watts (24V or 48V battery)

Load Output: 

Over-discharge of the battery can be prevented by connecting all loads to the load output. The load output will disconnect the load when the battery has been discharged to a pre-set voltage (48V model: interface with a relay). Alternatively, an intelligent battery management algorithm can be chosen: see Battery Life. The load output is short-circuit proof.

Battery Life - Intelligent Battery Management: 

When a solar charge controller is not able to recharge the battery to its full capacity within one day, the result is often that the battery will continually be cycled between a ‘partially charged’ state and the ‘end of discharge’ state. This mode of operation (no regular full recharge) will destroy a lead-acid battery within weeks or months. The Battery Life algorithm will monitor the state of charge of the battery and, if needed, day by day slightly increase the load disconnect level (i.e. disconnect the load earlier) until the harvested solar energy is sufficient to recharge the battery to nearly the full 100%. From that point onwards the load disconnect level will be modulated so that a nearly 100% recharge is achieved about once every week.

With Bluetooth built-in, the BMV Smart is ready for the Internet of Things (IoT) era. With Bluetooth being implemented in most other Victron Energy products, wireless communication between products will simplify system installation and enhance performance.


Easy to Install:

All electrical connections are to the quick-connect PCB on the current shunt. The shunt connects to the monitor with a standard RJ12 telephone cable. Included: RJ 12 cable (10 m) and battery cable with fuse (2 m); no other components needed. Also included is a separate front bezel for a square or round display appearance, a securing ring for rear mounting and screws for front mounting.

Midpoint Voltage Monitoring:

One bad cell or one bad battery can destroy a large, expensive battery bank. When batteries are connected in series, a timely warning can be generated by measuring the midpoint voltage. Please see the BMV manual, section 5.2, for more information. We recommend our Battery Balancer (BMS012201000) to maximize the service life of series-connected lead-acid batteries.

Very Low Current Draw from the Battery:

Current consumption: 0.7Ah per month (1mA) @12V and 0.6Ah per month (0.8mA) @ 24V. Especially Li-ion batteries have virtually no capacity left when discharged until low voltage shutdown. After shutdown due to low cell voltage, the capacity reserve of a Li-ion battery is approximately 1Ah per 100Ah battery capacity. The battery will be damaged if the remaining capacity reserve is drawn from the battery. A residual current of 10mA for example may damage a 200Ah battery if the system is left in a discharged state for more than 8 days.

Bi-stable Alarm Relay:

Prevents increased current draw in case of an alarm.
